Principles of Pain
Management for Nurses

Every nurse should be able to asses and manage pain. This course includes the essential components of nursing education about pain, directed towards entry level nurses. Entry-level nursing education varies between countries and may include university or hospital based training. The curriculum is comprehensive and represents the optimal level of pain education for nursing, acknowledging that it may not be possible or realistic to incorporate all components in some resource-poor countries. This course is based on the Pain Curriculum for Basic Nursing education prepared by the International Association for Study of Pain ad hoc committee in 2006.

Dr. Muralidhar Joshi .MD, DNB. is the Director of Joshi's Institute of Pain and Head of Pain Management & Anesthesia Department, Virinchi Hospitals at Hyderabad, encompassing a multidisciplinary pain programme. He is considered as the one of the pioneers practicing Pain management in Asia.He graduated from Government Medical College Bellary, Gulburga University in Karnataka, India. He completed his post-graduation in Anaesthesiology from Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, India. He was awarded a medal in the MD examination. He went onto finish the Diplomat of National Board in Anaesthesiology from National Board of Examination, New Delhi. He started working on pain management discipline during his stay at the premier institute (PGIMER) of Chandigarh, India. He kept on expanding his academic interests in pain management, not only the scientific aspects, but also practice management aspects. He has published his articles in various national & international journals. He has contributed book chapters in medical & scientific publications. He has pioneered the art of epidural adhesiolysis by Seldinger technique which is an innovative procedure popularised by him. He has authored the first 'Text Book of Pain Management' in India. He was instrumental in starting various teaching programme like online pain course, fellowship in pain management, in the country for the first time. Currently he is the Executive Member of National Body of ISSP (Indian Society for Study of Pain). This book has been his dream project to bring awareness amongst clinicians about the importance of pain management. Joshi's Institute of Pain is striving hard to educate the public about the preventive and curative aspects of pain. The institute is actively involved in education, training and research programmes.
